This song breaks my soul and my heart. After a whole day of staying by my dying grandmother's bedside, this was the first song I heard when I got home. I was broken and empty with grief. I tried to find solace with a street cat I was nursing. A few months later, my already 'tamed' cat died, and it was as though the scar of my grandmother's death was ripped open. And suddenly I had to say goodbye to two family members.

To this second movement of Shostakovitch's 2nd piano concerto, I wrote a speech for my grandfather's memorial service. The slow dramatic melody resonated with the strong emotions (he himself was more a fan of the requiem genre).
